Social movement needed to stop violence against women: NAP Secretary General

Bangladesh National Awami Party-Bangladesh NAP Secretary General M. Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan said that it is possible to prevent violence against women if every person in the society works with the spirit of cooperation and sympathy from their place. At the same time, it is necessary to build a social movement to stop the oppression of women.

She was speaking as the chief guest at a virtual discussion meeting organized by the National Women’s Movement on the occasion of Women’s Violence Prevention Day on Tuesday (August 24).

She said there are many cases of violence against women. Due to the procrastination, the people concerned, including the witnesses, gradually forgot about the incident. All in all, the cases were lost at once. Many false cases are being filed by abusing the Prevention of Violence against Women Act. Those who are the real victims are being delayed in getting justice. That is why lawyers, police and those concerned need to be more aware.

He said the legal framework in Bangladesh has been strengthened in the last three decades to prevent violence against women and protect children and various government and non-government initiatives have been taken. But domestic and social violence against women has not decreased much. On the contrary, as the days go by, women in different levels of family and society are facing various crises. Although the state or the government has taken various initiatives to protect the dignity of women, women feel helpless with many as they have not changed the attitude of the society and family. In the existing society, many women who are victims of violence or crisis do not even have the confidence to seek legal recourse.

National Women’s Movement Coordinator Shanta Akhter Ratna presided over the discussion, Bangladesh NAP Vice Chairman Swapan Kumar Saha, Joint Secretary General Krishak. Mohsin Bhuiyan, organizational secretary. Kamal Bhuiyan, Matiyara Chowdhury, Literary and Cultural Secretary, Shiuli Sultana, Joint Coordinator of the organization, Riva Akhter, Sultana Razia, Fatema Akhter Lucky and others.
