The decision to reduce the profit of savings certificates is ruthless: Bangladesh NAP

Demanding immediate reversal of the government’s decision to reduce the profit margin of savings certificates, Bangladesh National Awami Party-Bangladesh NAP Chairman Jebel Rahman Ghani and Secretary General M. Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan said if the government’s decision to reduce the profit margin of savings certificates is implemented, the income of the middle, lower and low-income people of the country will be reduced. Retired middle-ranking officials and employees in particular will face a crisis in their day-to-day expenditure and this will have a negative impact on society and the family.

They made the remarks in a statement sent to the media on Saturday (September 25th).

The two leaders said the government has already increased taxes on the source of income from savings certificates. Now again the government is going to reduce the income of the common people by reducing the rate of profit on their savings certificates. Which is nothing but the ruthless cruelty of the government towards the elderly, widows, retirees, small working families of millions of middle class families in the country.

They said the finance minister has touched the income of the common man by not taking any effective action against those involved in growing corruption, economic looting and smuggling of thousands of crores of rupees abroad. Inflation, rising commodity prices, electricity, gas, water bills, medicine prices are all rising, but every year in the name of the recovery of the economy, the sword is being wielded in the share of profits. The government does not even think that the income from these savings certificates does not cover the cost of old age medicine, the cost of a child who has not yet finished school, house rent, increased electricity bill, extra cost of pulses and rice. There are millions of helpless people in these millions of families being endangered by reducing the profits of savings certificates.

The two leaders said the state subsidizes, incentives, interest-free loans to buy cars and houses, cooks and drivers. But instead of looking back at the survivors who rely on savings certificates worth Tk 15/20 lakh, they are dragging the dividends down the road. Such a decision is just ruthless cruelty. Such a decision of the government will further ruin the lives of the people who are really dependent on savings certificates.

They called on the government to immediately reverse its decision to reduce the profit margin of savings certificates.
