Jugantor editor Saiful Alam, former president of the National Press Club on Monday, his birthday was greeted with flowers. Saiful Alam, editor of the daily Jugantar and former president of the National Press Club, celebrated his birthday on Monday. At 10:30 in the morning, he was greeted with a cake cut and sweetened in the TV lounge of the National Press Club.

Saiful Alam started his career as a journalist in 1969 as a co-editor of the weekly ‘Kishore Bangla’ while a student at Dhaka University. Since then he has been working tirelessly in this profession. After Kishore Bangla, he was the Senior Reporter of Dainik Janata (1973-74), Chief Reporter of Dainik Nab Abhiyan (1985) and Senior Reporter of Dainik Inquilab (August 1979 to August 1999).

Saiful Alam has been with the daily Jugantar since its inception. On September 1, 1999, he was appointed as the Chief Correspondent of the daily Jugantar. He then served as the deputy editor and executive editor of the paper. On 19 November 2013, he became the acting editor of Jugantar. Later, on the occasion of the 21st founding anniversary of Jugantar, freedom fighter Nurul Islam, the dreamer of the newspaper and chairman of Jamuna Group, declared Saiful Alam as the editor. In his long career he has written in various magazines including weekly Chitrali, Mashal, Agami, Sadwip. He is the former president of the National Press Club, the most prestigious organization of journalists. He is also the Senior Vice President of the National Press Club 2016-2017, Joint Secretary (1995-1996 and 1996-1998) and twice a member of the Management Committee.

Saiful Alam, a founding member of the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU), was twice elected joint general secretary of the Bangladesh Environmental Journalists Forum and a member of the management committee on several occasions. He is an advisor to the Greater Comilla Journalists’ Association in Dhaka and a life member of the Chandpur Press Club. He served as the central convener of Chander Hat, one of the largest national children’s and youth organizations in Bangladesh, for a period (1989-1990). He was the joint secretary and member of the management committee of the Child Welfare Council.

Saiful Alam was a member of the steering committee of Bangladesh Press Institute (PIB) from 1996 to 1999. From 2016 to 2017, he also served as the director of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS). He is also a member of the Bangladesh Editorial Board. His first book ‘Chherapata’ (Children’s Adolescent Story) was published in 1972. The second edition was published in 1997 under the title ‘Neem Flower Scent’. The second book is rhyme-poem ‘Akash Baralei Haat’. The third book is ‘Some thoughts, some words’. Jagriti came out in 2013. The fourth book is ‘Democracy is the wisdom of minus nine plus’. It is published from Country Publications. The fifth book is ‘Journey to Democracy and Others’. Palal Publishing published it in 2019. He has received the Abdur Rahman Chishti Memorial Award (2006) of Bangladesh Music Journalists Association, Padakshap Award (2010), Honorary Memorial of National Integrated Development Foundation (2014) and Altaf Ali Hasu Memorial Medal (2019).

Saiful Alam started his education at Motijheel Government Primary School in the capital. He then passed the secondary examination from Motijheel Central Government Boys’ High School and the Higher Secondary Examination in 1964 from Dhaka College. He graduated from Dhaka University in 1967 with a degree in Bangla Language and Literature. He was the Vice-President of the Dhaka University Culture Parliament. Saiful Alam was born in Farashganj, Dhaka. Father Mohammad Ali Arshad Mia and mother Begum Shamsun Nahar. Wife Ferdousi Begum. He is a banker by profession.
